Participant on Budding Beekeeper course

Just for the Buzz is a 90 minute session hosted via Zoom, with an optional add-on of a practical session at the hives. It explores the wonderful world of bees, particularly, the life of the honey bee.

Topics in this session include:

  • There are 267 species of bee in the UK, we will take a look at what differentiates them and how we categorise them into: bumblebees, solitary bees and honey bees
  • A more detailed understanding into the different types of honey bee and the roles they play, both inside and outside the hive
  • Understanding why honey bees play a crucial role in the world as we know it and the consequences of not protecting our pollinators
  • How do bees make? – A look at the variety of by-products that bees makes and learn how exactly they make them
  • The structure of a beehive and how it works in harmony with both the bees and the beekeeper
  • The role of a beekeeper and what happens during a hive inspection
  • Take a virtual look inside the hive with our head beekeeper
  • Bee of the Week! – a fascinating bee-related story

 

Add on the option of a practical session at the hives and get up close and personal with our bees!

Get into a beekeepers suit and take a closer look at the inner workings of the colony. Learn how to light a smoker and use it during your hive inspection. See the workers buzzing around and the Queen reigning over her colony.

After you have completed your theory session, you can add on the option of a practical session at the hives and get up close and personal with the bees during a hive inspection.

Budding Beekeeper workshops are a four-part, online, theory based course, aimed at beginners who have an interest in becoming a beekeeper or are just looking for a more in-depth look into bees and the role of a beekeeper.

Topics covered include:

  • How to narrow-down 267 UK bee species into three categories.
  • The different types of honey bee, the job roles they have both in and outside the hive and what makes a successful colony.
  • The structure of a beehive and how it works in harmony with both the bees and the beekeeper.
  • The role of a beekeeper and what happens during a hive inspection.
  • Swarm prevention and control
  • Pests & diseases – what they are and how can we reduce the risks?
  • Honey bees and pollination: one small flower for bees, one giant feast for human-kind!
  • Bee of the week! A bee-related fact or story that has inspired my beekeeping journey.
  • And much more… including quick, practical tips you can follow at home to create a better environment for our buzzers.

After you have completed your theory session, you can add on the option of two practical sessions at the hives and get up close and personal with the bees during a hive inspection.

You’ll get the opportunity to get into a beekeepers suit and take a closer look at the inner workings of the colony. Learn how to light a smoker and use it during your hive inspection. You will also practice ‘Queen marking’ on our drone bees.
