Beginners beekeeping course

Immerse yourself into the world of bees with our 6-week course aimed at budding beekeepers.
The course consists of four sessions, held weekly online over Zoom. Where you will take a deeper dive into the fascinating culture of honey bees and learn the basics of becoming a beekeeper.
After you have completed the online portion of the course, you will be invited to the hives to put your new-found knowledge into practice, for two sessions at the hives. Beekeeping suits and equipment are provided.

Session one: Introduction to Bees
- How to identify different types of bees and sorting our bee species' into three categories
- Looking at the different types of honey bee within the hive and how they maintain a successful colony
Session two: Two Types of Reproduction
- Understanding the unusual reproductive process of the honey bee
- How and why bees swarm, and a beekeeper’s swarm control methods
Session three: Beehives - Past & Present
- Looking at the evolution of beekeeping and beehives through the ages
- How to decide on the best hive for the bees and the beekeeper
Session four: Beehives - Honey bee Health & Happiness
- Identify threats to our colonies and how to use preventative measures
- What by-products we can harvest from our hives and how they are made
Session five: First practical at the hives
- Put your new-found knowledge into practice with a hive inspection
- During our inspection, you will be tasked with finding various elements within the hive, that you have learnt about during your online sessions
Session six: Second (and final) practical at the hives
- You will have the opportunity to try your hand at Queen marking
- Honey tasting: experience the different flavour profiles of each of our honeys, from a variety of locations around the North West
